What is College Steps?
The mission of College Steps is to provide support to students who are cognitively and academically qualified to attend college, but may lack the social and communication skills that are necessary for their higher education experience.
College Steps helps students prepare for meaningful careers and autonomy after college. College Steps is a NOVA-hosted, fee-based program that provides specialized resources and supports for NOVA students with social, communication, or learning disabilities. In most cases, community-based resources cover the cost of College Steps.
Substitutions that are based on a disability require additional documentation and must be approved by a special college committee. More information on the policy and how to request a substitution can be found on NOVA’s website at Course Substitution for Students with Disabilities.
ALL dual enrolled students wishing to use disability accommodations for the Virginia Placement Test or in a NOVA class must request them through NOVA’s Disability Support Services (DSS) office. This is true for all students wishing to use accommodations whether or not they currently have an IEP or 504 Plan. IEPs and 504 plans are not accepted in NOVA courses or for the placement tests.
This applies to all students, including those taking dual enrollment classes in their high schools. Students using accommodations in dual enrollment classes must provide their instructors with a Memorandum of Accommodations (MOA), which they obtain from NOVA’s DSS office.
Students should be aware that not all accommodations on IEPs and 504 Plans will be approved in college classes. Students choosing to use accommodations without first having them approved by DSS will not earn college credit.
To request accommodations please view the tutorial video. To submit the online application, DSS Application.
NOTE: All email correspondence from the Disability Support Services office will be sent to your NOVA student email. Check your NOVA student email throughout the day if you are expecting information from your DSS counselor.
Make sure your disability documentation is complete and up to date. Check the Disability Documentation Guidelines for more information.
Become familiar with your campus surroundings in advance and know where to go and what to do during an emergency. Review the Emergency Preparedness Guidelines.

If you are enrolled in another college or university where you are receiving accommodations it may not be necessary to submit disability documentation when requesting accommodations at NOVA. A Letter of Accommodations from your other college may be sufficient. The final determination will be made after you submit your application and conduct an intake with a NOVA DSS counselor. For more information view the tutorial video. You may begin the process by submitting the DSS Application.
